It’s no surprise that regular maintenance of any piece of technology will ensure it works well for longer, and the same idea applies to electrical equipment. Whether you have a commercial property, industrial or residential property, the importance of electrical maintenance is huge. Ensuring regular upkeep of electrical products is crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of any facility that relies on electricity.

Electrical maintenance involves regular testing, the installation of wires, making a safety check on electrical systems and equipment via inspection, and repairing or replacing any damaged equipment. It is important to have a qualified professional to conduct industrial electrical maintenance services and make sure that the equipment is in good working condition. But what exactly is the importance of electrical maintenance? Let’s take a look.

The Importance of Electrical Maintenance

Prevent Costly Damage

Your business needs to run without disruptions, and an electrical error may cause interruptions to the everyday function and flow of your business. The last thing you want is the failure of electrical systems, that’s why electrical maintenance will help prevent any system or equipment failure. This will save you time and money, ensuring the electrician will catch a fault or detect it before any further damage is made and prevent expensive repairs.

Ensure a Level of Safety

When you’re working with an electrical system, whether it’s large or small in size, maintenance will ensure a level of safety for everyone in the perimeter. Flickering lights, tripping switches and discoloured wall sockets are all signs of potential hazards. Some other risks that may occur with a lack of maintenance is a fire breaking out. However, with regular electrical maintenance, an electrician will be able to catch looming faults before they become hazardous, so you have enough time to rectify the issue and minimise the risk of injury.

Extend the Life of Equipment

Having reliable and well-maintained electrical equipment is important for any business. The importance of electrical maintenance is key in extending the life of your equipment, so you don’t need to replace or purchase equipment on a regular basis. With proper maintenance, identifying and correcting issues that would otherwise lead to equipment failure can save business owners money in replacement costs in the long run.

Reduce Energy Costs

Oftentimes, when an electrical appliance or other equipment has malfunctioning wires or other electrical issues, it may use up more electricity than necessary in order to function normally. With regular electrical and maintenance, electricians will be able to source and eliminate smaller problems with electrical equipment that may be a strain and cause the equipment to use more energy than it usually should. Regular maintenance can also help identify potential issues before they become bigger problems and lead to higher energy bills. Electricians have the knowledge and experience needed to properly inspect and repair any electrical appliances or systems, helping businesses save on their energy costs while ensuring safe operation.

A Healthy Electrical System

Having a reliable electrical system is beneficial to any home and business. From working appliances, powering lights and other electronics to ensuring the safety of residents and employees, having an efficient and functioning electrical system is key to the peace of mind it gives you. To guarantee your systems are running smoothly, schedule electrical checks with your trusted electrician, who will be able to make current updates on the health of the system. The early insights and information your electrician will give you ends up saving you from spending excessively in the future.

Your Trusted North Brisbane Electrician

Enforcing plans for electrical and maintenance is an essential aspect of any facility’s operation and can be hazardous work, that’s why we recommend a licensed professional to undertake any maintenance, whether it’s in an industrial or commercial building. Ensure the safety of you and your employees, prevent equipment failure and extend the life of equipment by contacting our team for commercial electrical services. When it’s time for a new look inside your home, what’s a great way that is often overlooked? Interior light fixtures are the secret. You can create an entirely new ambience by upgrading your interior lighting. We’ll take a look at some excellent ideas.

A New World of Lighting

Home interior lighting has come a long way – where once it was almost entirely utilitarian, lighting fixtures have become artistic and design focal points in their own right. They may be the centrepiece of a room’s unique look, or they may complement and support other design elements. Either way, the choices have never been greater, and applications have never been more diverse.

Upgrading What the Builder Chose

Most new construction features interior light fixtures that are basic and economical. The builder has many other costs, and cannot know what each buyer might prefer, so they will generally choose something that functions well and is very middle of the road visually. It is almost always up to the new home’s new owner to define a room’s look by deciding what they really want and finding a professional to install it.

Upgrading What Has Always Been There

At the other end of the spectrum is the older house that has had the same fixtures and appointments for a long time – possibly decades. Sometimes this can be quite charming, and often it is rather drab. Few things wake up a sleepy old room like thoughtfully chosen new interior light fixtures. More visually compelling than a repaint or new carpet – and cheaper, too.

Living Room

New lighting can really make a statement. Choose a strongly visual central fixture, and support with ambient lighting around the sides of the room, possibly from indirect sources. Light should be warm and inviting – the living room is the place where the house meets the world outside, and visitors get their first impressions. Table lamps can do double duty as ambient sources and as task lighting when placed near comfortable seating. Dimmer control is always good in a larger space – you can adjust the lighting to balance natural light, for a bright look by day and a cozy feeling in the evening.

Kitchen

When the kitchen includes a breakfast or dining area, this is a place for strong interior ceiling lights – one or more over the table, providing good lighting for everything that will happen there, and sets a theme for the room. Most families spend a lot of time at the kitchen table through the day. Excellent task lighting for food preparation is the other priority – even a smaller kitchen can be elevated by making food prep spaces highly useful and cheerful by warm focused lighting, with a diffuse overhead source lighting up the whole room. Pantry space will benefit from interior light fixtures, and cabinets may as well.

Dining Room

An interesting theme fixture over the table and extra lighting on the walls to illuminate a sideboard or other accessory furniture has always been successful. You want good lighting levels but not too harsh or direct – a pleasing indirect effect allows food and people to look their best. Some dining rooms are more formal, some more casual, but this general approach will work well in both.

Bedrooms

A warm central source of light can be a statement in a larger space, or a simple functional unit when you don’t want to overwhelm a smaller space. It should be placed away from the bed. Task lighting for sitting up in bed may be placed on nightstands or dressers. Consider making all the bedroom lighting controllable from in bed – saves getting up on a chilly evening to turn off when it’s time for lights out.

Bathrooms

Possibly not the first place people think of for a home interior lighting upgrade, but it can be very effective here. An artistic central fixture can set a theme, supported by colour-complementing accents like towels and a bath rug. Neutral local lighting on both sides of the mirror gives a close look for people getting ready for the day – or for a night out. Additional light fixtures placed in a shower or over a bathtub will need to be water-resistant and possibly accepted for damp-area use – your professional electrician will know and will be able to advise.

Utility Spaces

Garages are often underserved by whatever lighting may be present. This may be one reason they are often under-utilised. Bring in functional wide-area interior ceiling lights – fluorescents can even work here – and gain new use and new vitality.

Lighting upgrades need the involvement of trusted, licenced, and certified professionals. Latched Electrical Solutions has done so many great projects through the years. We want to hear your ideas, and we can offer more from our long experience.

One of the most important – and most frequently overlooked – aspects of good system installation is cable management. This is as true for your home as it is for the most complex commercial setups. We all know the frustration of dealing with tangled cabling behind a computer or a TV – the cables seem to get that way all by themselves! Good cable management solutions make your home and office safer by reducing trip and fire hazards – and it may keep that expensive component from taking a shortcut to a hard floor.

Latched Electrical Can Do It

Latched Electrical Solutions has great ways to tame the bundle of snakes. Tidy disposition of all cabling is always a part of our highly-rated installations and upgrades. We are your go-to North Brisbane electrician – the trustworthy, cost-effective choice for commercial electrical services and residential electrical services.

Years of experience and our many happy customers back this up. Tell us about your next project – contact us online, or call 0419 283 055, to request a call out, a quote, or with any questions.

Plan to Get Started

Efficient cable management solutions start with good planning. Cable runs may actually be the most significant physical part of an installation, as when components are spread out over an office or rooms at home, and conversely when components are racked tightly together, or the installation has to occupy a small space like a closet that may not have been originally designed for this use. A cable plan can change as the install progresses – and it usually does. Having the plan to start with always saves time, money, and frustration.

Computer Cable Management

Great advances have been made in wireless connections for computers – everybody loves a wireless mouse, and how would we manage without Wi-Fi? Important cabling is still with us – for monitors, high-bandwidth peripherals like external drives, and of course for connecting everything to a power source. This can become a major issue in office installations, especially where space is at a premium, and in older spaces where wall outlets may be limited in number – and where power available may not be sufficient to run multiple workstations.

In addition, as work of many kinds increasingly involves high-quality 3D visualisation, the power required by modern high-end desktop video cards just keeps going up. All these factors will tend to involve more cabling rather than less, and good computer cable management solutions combined with a sensible power budget will be needed to keep it all organised.

TV Cable Management

Flatscreen TV panels are the greatest thing since colour television – gone are the bulky, heavy boxes of the increasingly remote past, and their low-definition images. TV cabling is still on the scene, though – in many cases it has actually increased, as today’s TV panels have connections for a wide variety of external components, for example: either as inbound sources of data and picture, or outbound for speakers and recording devices.

Thoughtfully placed Velcro loops can be a big help to manage cables for a temporary or casual installation, but a professional look for the office and a clutter-free look for the home need something more. TV cable management can be made much easier by gathering the bundles into cable chases – many kinds are available and they’re not expensive – and then routing below and behind available surfaces such as desks and dividers, or sideboards or even bookshelves.

In Wall Cable Management

In many ways, the best of the cable management solutions – and usually the nicest-looking. It is not always necessary to open up the wall – unless a completely stealth look is desired. Attractive cable chases with reconfigurable power and data breakout modules are available, for installation at a convenient height on permanent wall surfaces. No more scrambling under a desk. In a modern office space and even in some home settings, these can become a positive supporting design element in their own right, and they certainly provide great convenience for users.

Not all situations will allow the use of this type of cable chase. Many will still require the traditional in wall cable management solution using existing conduit or by installing new conduit. Especially when the wall is to be opened for conduit, it is important to ensure that there are provisions for future expansion as well as current needs.

Ceiling fans can be an attractive addition to almost any space, and they can provide a cooling alternative to air conditioning on a hot day. It seems that a ceiling fan should be less expensive and more efficient than air conditioning, but is that true? Are ceiling fans energy efficient enough to be practical as well as good-looking? And how do ceiling fans compare to other types, such desk and floor fans?

Are Ceiling Fans Energy Efficient? Let’s find out.

The ceiling fan has come a long way. These days a ceiling fan may be any combination of standard or low-profile, high-flow or standard-flow, damp-rated, LED lit, WiFi enabled, AC or DC powered, with classic or modern or even futuristic looks. Some of these features are about personal preference, others have a major impact on fan efficiency. Which is best for you? Latched Electrical Solutions can help you find the best solution for your cooling needs. For a quote, a call out or for any questions, you can reach us on 0419 283 055 or via our contact page.

Efficiency in Air Movement vs Power Consumption

The more air you want to move with a fan the more power you will need. This is always true, but efficiency improvements have changed the relationship. Modern ceiling fan design includes significant changes to blade design and the motor powering the fan, maximising air movement while minimising power requirement. High-flow fans often use specially designed curved blades to push more air more efficiently than traditional flat-bladed ceiling fans. DC motors are in wide use today – they draw up to 70 percent less power than AC motors for the same work done. The best and most efficient modern ceiling fans will combine these improvements – they will typically cost more than older designs, but they will always deliver better performance.

Ceiling Fans vs Air Conditioning

A good strong air conditioning unit will of course cool an interior space faster and to a greater degree than a ceiling fan – but that power comes at a cost. And is it always needed? When continuous light cooling is needed, a ceiling fan will perform very well, and with its smaller current draw will always cost less than an air conditioning unit. The longer the fan runs, the better the cost comparison. The fan will also be much quieter and more pleasant than typical window or wall-mounted air conditioning.

Ceiling Fans and Air Conditioning Working Together

In a very hot interior, air conditioning actually becomes more efficient initially, when all aspects are considered. The power used by air conditioning is offset by the unit’s ability to cool down fast. If both air conditioning and ceiling fan are available, then the air conditioning may be used first to drop the temperature to a point where the fan can take over, so you get the best of both in the most efficient scenario.

Outdoor Ceiling Fans

One specialised home setting where a ceiling fan will do better than air conditioning will be a covered patio or similar semi-outdoor space that is protected from rain. Air conditioning does not usually perform efficiently in locations that are open to the outside. A modern damp-rated ceiling fan can provide directed cooling in a setting like this.

Ceiling Fans vs Portable Fans

Portable fans such as desk fans and floor fans can be very convenient, providing close-up cooling right where it’s needed. They are less useful in cooling larger spaces, and in most cases they use much less efficient AC motors, so over time their running cost will exceed that of a modern ceiling fan by a large margin. They are really a completely different class of fan than a ceiling fan, and their best uses are not the same. One way a portable fan can help is in a very warm interior being cooled by a ceiling fan – if it’s really hot and the ceiling fan is doing its best but falling behind, adding the local cooling of a portable fan might make turning on power-hungry air conditioning unnecessary.

Ceiling Fans in Commercial Spaces

Ceiling fans used to be very commonly found in commercial spaces but were phased out in favour of air conditioning. They’re making a comeback as businesses seek ways to trim their energy bills. As in the home, it is not always necessary to engage the high cooling power and cost of air conditioning in the absence of extremely hot weather. An investment in modern high-efficiency ceiling fans can pay off for a business in a moderate climate.

Ceiling Fans in Other Business Environments

In production environments, well deployed energy efficient ceiling fans can provide comfortable surroundings that lead to higher employee morale and productivity. Ceiling fans are up and out of the way – preventing the potential hazards of randomly placed portable fans in the workplace. In retail and office settings, ceiling fans can also add pleasant detailing to the design of the space. People do like ceiling fans. Commercial use of ceiling fans is definitely a place for professional advice and involvement.

Ask The Experts

We suggest that the next question after “are ceiling fans energy efficient?” is whether a particular ceiling fan is going to work well for you. We’re ready to help you with any energy efficient ceiling fans you may require, so your options are very broad. When it’s time to have electrical work done on your home or business, it can be difficult to know if the work will be performed by someone who is qualified. But there are questions to ask electricians that will let you make an educated and informed decision about the quality of an electrical contractor before you employ them.

The kind of work that an electrician does is usually of critical importance. Poorly done electrical work can lead to health and safety risks, such as fires or electrocution. Therefore, it’s important that you find an electrician you can trust. Latched Electrical Solutions are the trusted electrical contractors north Brisbane home and business owners depend on. We put together this list of 8 questions to ask an electrical contractor you’re considering hiring that will help you to determine if they are up to the job.

1 – Who Will Perform the Work?

If you are talking with an electrical company on the phone or if a company sends someone out to your location to assess the job and provide a quote, you cannot assume that person will be the one who will perform the actual work. Inquire if the person you are talking to will do the work or if somebody else will. If the person you are talking with will perform the task, you can ask some follow up questions about their credentials. If someone else will do the work, there are other questions you can ask about that person.

2 – Ask about Licencing

No matter who will perform the work, you need to ask if that person is a licenced electrician. If they are licenced you also need to ask about the specific kind of licence they hold. In Queensland there are 6 different classes of electrical work licences available. Different licences are required for different kinds of electrical work, so inquire about the licence the electrician holds and the kind of work that licence allows them to do.

3 – Find Out About Insurance

This is one of the most important questions to ask electricians. We mentioned before that the kind of work that an electrician performs is often critical in nature. Any accident involving electricity can lead to property damage or personal injury. Any electrician that will be performing work on your premises should be fully insured against such accidents. So be sure to ask about the kind of insurance the electrician holds.

4 – Have You Done This Kind of Work Before?

It might feel strange to ask an electrician if they’ve performed the work they’ll be doing for you before. But this is an important part of doing your due diligence on them. What you’re really inquiring about is their level of experience, so ask them about the other kinds of jobs they’ve performed while you’re at it. You want to hire an electrician with experience who knows what they’re doing.

5 – Does Your Work Come with a Warranty?

When you purchase a car, a TV, or a refrigerator you ask about the warranty. When you have electrical work done you should ask the same thing. A good electrician will stand behind their work and offer a warranty on the quality of their work. The warranty will give you peace of mind that the work is done right or will be made right if there is a problem.

6 – Ask About Disruptions to Electricity

This question isn’t really about the quality of the electrician you will be hiring, but it is important to know, especially if the work will be performed at a business. Electrical work often requires the electricity to be turned off in a home or building, or in a large section of a home or building. This can cause a lot of disruption to your business or your life. Asking about the electricity being turned off also gives you a chance to judge the quality and thoroughness of the answer, which will tell you about the quality of the electrician you are considering hiring.

7 – Will this Work Require a Permit?

A lot of electrical work requires permissions or permits from the local council. This is especially true for expansion work on your home or office building. It’s a good idea to ask about any permits that might be needed and about who will acquire the permits. Sometimes an electrical contractor can get the necessary permits, but other times the building owner will have to get the permits. Either way, a good electrician should be able to give you advice on the permits needed and how to get them.

8 – Ask for a Price Estimate

You don’t want any surprises when it comes to the price of electrical work, so asking about the price is one of the good questions to ask an electrical contractor upfront. The electrical contractor should be able to give you an estimated price range for the work they will perform. It’s a good idea to ask about any possible complications that could increase the price and the likelihood of those complications occurring. Find out as much as you can about the price and make sure there are no hidden fees.

An Electrician You Can Trust

Now you know some good questions to ask an electrical contractor before you hire them. If you are in need of electrical work, you can depend on the fully licenced and insured team of electricians at Latched Electrical Solutions. Feel free to ask us any of the questions on this list or any other questions you might have. We’re sure you’ll be satisfied with our answers. You can contact us online or by calling 0419 283 055. We look forward to speaking with you.
